It would be interesting news to televiewers that the controversial Angel Locsin will be the contestant in tonight’s edition of the highly popular and toprating “Kapamilya Deal or No Deal.”

Did you know that during the taping of the episode, Angel was about to accept the Banker’s offer when suddenly her mom arrived?

This was the first time her mom made a TV appearance and was formally introduced and welcomed as the mother of the controversial actress.

In an interview with ABS-CBN after the show, Angel said she was really surprised her mom came because personally, she doesn’t want her family to be seen in public or become showbiz figures themselves.

She narrated that her mom really wanted to watch her play in “Kapamilya Deal or No Deal” to give her morale support, but Angel insisted that she just stay at home to avoid further public exposure.

At the start of the game, Angel felt relieved that her mom wasn’t there but she sprung a surprise and arrived halfway of the show all dressed–up and wearing make–up.

Angel said, “nagpamake-up pa si Mommy!” And Kris was quoted as saying “Mother knows best” pushing Angel to go one more round for a chance of getting a better deal.

Other sidelights:

Before giving his initial offer, the Banker said, “Ang Kapamilya hindi napapalitan, pero ang puso puwedeng i-transplant.”

The studio has a noticeably jampacked crowd eagerly anticipating to get a glimpse of the newest Kapamilya.

Joining Angel for morale support were her manager, Becky Aguila, cousin Mario, Valerie Concepcion, Tricia Roman, and Bianca Aguila (Becky’s daughter).

Angel plans to give most of her winnings in “Kapamilya, Deal or No Deal” to Gabriella, which she actively supports.

Because “Kapamilya, Deal or No Deal” was a direct competitor of her previous shows, Angel admitted that she didn’t watch it sometimes. Similarly, Kris said she didn’t watch Angel’s TV shows because of the competition.

When she was invited to join the said game show, she said “Excited ako ng sinabi sa akin na maglalaro ako pero medyo weird kasi katapat nga ng mga shows ko sa kabila.”

She was obviously tense while playing the game as she has been drinking a lot of water in between breaks. “Iba pala talaga yung feeling kapag ikaw na yung nasa taas at naglalaro,” Angel added.

Angel also expressed her curiosity as to the banker’s true identity and said she wanted to meet him in person

Pop Princess Sarah Geronimo is currently on a month-long US concert tour that will include a show at New York’s Hammerstein Hall on Sept. 15. ABS-CBN held a press conference for Sarah before she left for the States because when she arrives, her latest teleserye “Pangarap na Bituin” would have already been on air.

In the teleserye, Sarah is joined by Rica Peralejo and Maja Salvador and together they play sisters who’re separated from each other. In “Pangarap na Bituin,” Sarah’s leading man is Jericho Rosales. Completing the cast are John Arcilla, Sandy Andolong, Cherrie Pie Picache, Rio Locsin and Joel Torre.

Sarah plays Emerald, an acoustic singer who resides in Boracay where her adoptive parent brought her. She was orphaned at a young age because of the Mayon Volcano eruption that killed her parents. This tragedy also caused her to lose her older sister Sapphire (Rica) who will be reunited with them several years later. Together with her younger sister Ruby (Maja), they were forced to live in an orphanage where they became close to fellow orphan Terrence (Jericho).

Since the start, Sarah has shown that she has the makings of a star, with her humble beginnings, exceptional talent, hard work, and most of all belief in the power of her dream. She became a singing sensation, a brilliant actress and a total performer.

But Sarah did not gain stardom overnight. Her first singing stint was at the age of two when she sang “Pasko na Naman” with Pinky Marquez and Richard Reynoso in a mall tour. At four years old, her mother would accompany her to auditions for different TV programs. Sarah became part of the kiddie shows “Pen-Pen de Sarapen” (when she was between 4-6 years old) “Ang TV” (7-8 years old) and “Next” (8-9 years old). In between auditions, Sarah would perform at shopping malls and hotel lounges. She was one of the performers during the l995 visit of Pope John Paul ll. At an early age, she braved the agonizing process of joining singing contests and even then, people saw her extraordinary talent. Only a few know that she was even part of then “SangLinggo nAPO Sila’s Princess Asia” in l995. But it seemed like fate was waiting for the right time for Sarah to shine.

Viva Records’ “Search for a Star” was the singing contest that catapulted Sarah to stardom. At age 14, she emerged as the grand prize winner with her rendition of Celine Dion’s “To Love You More.” She won R1-million and a managerial contract with Viva Artist Agency. More than that, she gave a new start to televised singing contests and opened the door of show business for hopeful divas and balladeers. After this turning point, what followed were Platinum albums with chart-topping singles, successful concerts here and abroad, movie offers (she played supporting roles in Viva’s “Filipinas” and “Captain Barbell,” and starred opposite Mark Bautista in “Lastikman”), endorsements, and legions of fans here and abroad. Critics also recognized her remarkable talent and contribution in the industry, as Sarah bagged different awards from a number of award–giving bodies each year.

In 2004, Sarah joined the Kapamilya network and had her first TV series, “Sarah the Teen Princess” on ABS–CBN. Not long after, she became a regular on the Sunday variety show “ASAP,” and hosted the talent search “Little Big Star,” which was followed by “Little Big Superstar.” In 2006, Sarah got her biggest break and proved that she can really act when she portrayed the role of the young fanatic Dorina, in the toprating teleserye “Bituing Walang Ningning,” inspired by the movie of the same title, and topbilled by megastar Sharon Cuneta and Ms. Cherie Gil. In “ASAP ‘07,” Sarah is one of the “Champions” where she is featured weekly in its much-awaited Grand Face-Off segment where she displays her vocal acrobatics uniquely her own. Fans are able to appreciate her even more in “The Other Side of Sarah” segment of the same concert-TV show.

Incidentally, Xtreme Magic Sing, exclusively distributed by the Astra Group, recently signed up Sarah as its latest endorser. Sarah’s successful concert “Sarah Geronimo in Motion” was sponsored by Xtreme Magic Sing.

Said Orville Roque, Astra Group President/CEO: “We chose Sarah to endorse Xtreme Magic Sing as she is, like Xtreme Magic Sing, a family unifier. She projects warmth and strength as she is wholesome, hardworking, talented, and positive. For us Filipinos, singing has always played a role in our families, in good times and in bad. Even when we are far away from each other, singing songs that have meaning and history in our families brings us back home even if only while singing the song.”

Sarah will be presenting the latest Xtreme Magic sing X11000: Wireless, the first in the wireless series. This is an all-in-one wireless karaoke system, with a remote control that selects song reservation and random playback, external video input, and a recording function, among mainstay Xtreme Magic sing features such as Song Section Repeat, Voice Change, Real Time Scoring, and Scoring Level Selection, among others.

Myriad billboards line Metro Manila’s main thoroughfares and one that stands out among them is young actress Katrina Halili’s for apparel brand Hang Ten.

There, Katrina is seen donning Hang Ten’s ladies’ line, a line that has her fashionable and casual off-screen style down pat. For despite her sultry onscreen persona, the talented actress loves fuss-free fashion.

“Katrina Halili is the perfect Hang Ten girl. She embodies the sense of style that her generation favors stylish, yet comfortable,” says the management of Hang Ten Philippines in a statement.

Katrina, meanwhile, reveals that she has always worn Hang Ten even before her stint in the reality search “Starstruck” began.

“Even when I was still in high school, I appreciated how Hang Ten complimented my body,” she says.

Petite, yet curvaceous, Katrina says it used to be hard for her to find the perfect tee and top to complement her body.

“So I loved it when I discovered Hang Ten. I really like how its clothes fit my body,” she says.

Katrina is particularly fond of Hang Ten’s ladies pants that she says seems to have been designed to show off her legs. “Like most people, I go around in jeans and sometimes, it can be a hassle finding good jeans that still make you feel like a girl.

“Finding a brand like Hang Ten that understands my body was a relief,” she confides. “Once you find a great pair of jeans, you can wear them with high heels and you’re ready for anything.”

As for tops, Katrina admits that form flattering tees are her favorite casual clothing. “I always seem to be on the go these days so I prefer my clothes to be comfortable but still feminine,” she says.

If there’s an important aspect of her career that singer Jonalyn Viray is grateful for it’s GMA Network’s Pinoy TV. According to her, Pinoy TV was the reason she has done a number of shows abroad during the last quarter of 2006 and this year. The Pinoy Pop Superstar is at the moment in Honolulu , Hawaii for a show with Jennylyn Mercado today, Aug. 17.

“We received good feedback about our show. We have good ticket sales and I’m still amazed that I have supporters in the States,” she remarked in Filipino. “I’ve been to Turkey, Japan and Hawaii last year. They were so hospitable in Hawaii that they even toured us last year. And now these same people bought tickets again for our show. It’s very flattering!”

In her travels abroad, she has performed for an international convention. She has also visited Filipino communities to promote Pinoy TV with Ogie Alcasid and other GMA artists.

“It really feels good to travel. I’m enjoying every minute of it. I’m very happy that I’m realizing my dreams of visiting these countries which I never expected to happen in my life before. I’m also happy to meet and mingle with different people,” she proudly related.

So how did her travels abroad help her as a performer?

“As a performer it helps to do shows abroad because you don’t only get a Filipino audience but foreigners too. You get to perform in such a way that they’ll understand what you’re singing even if it’s not their own language. I’ve learned how to share my talents well and I’ve become more confident when I do shows here,” she said.

She added that unlike the Manila crowd, her audience abroad are livelier and more animated in appreciating her performances. She related that in her shows in Manila , she has noticed that the crowd won’t applaude animatedly or show their appreciation unless she belts a song.

“I really get nervous when I don’t get a reaction from the audience. Until now I’m still nervous on stage especially if I have a song that I haven’t memorized well,” smiled Jonalyn.

She also shared that she would make time to see places whenever she’s abroad. She always enjoy shopping for souvenirs she could keep and display in her house. The downside of her travels is that she would immediately miss her family and Pinoy fans and a huge cellphone bill afterwards because she would keep on calling and texting her family and friends whenever she’s out of the country.

“One of my favorite souvenirs that I bought was from Turkey . It’s shaped as an eyes with a pupil it’s said to be a lucky charm. I bought a lot of it and gave it to my friends and family back here. I also like buying make-up abroad because sometimes tnat ones I like are not readily available here. So I buy a lot of my favorite make-up brands,” she expressed.

These positive aspects of Jonalyn are the things that keep her spirits up regarding her singing career. Since being crowned the Pinoy Pop Superstar winner in 2005, she has also received unfavorable comments about her as a “champion.” She shared that she came across negative comments in the Net and has seen her various performances with some unsavory write-ups in You Tube.

“I’ve been compared to other champions from the other station like Rachelle Ann Go, Sarah Geronimo and Sheryn Regis. They’d upload all the videos of our perfomances of a certain song together. Then they’ll comment line by line about the song on sing it the best way according to them. Sometimes they really ridicule you,” she said.

But she’s also thankful because those who upload these videos really took time to edit and compare her with other singers. And for that she is happy. Despite these all, Jonalyn’s still thankful for the wonderful opportunities she has received through her exposure in Pinoy TV and the projects that GMA Artist Center has given her.

“Before, I was hurt but now I just look forward to a better future. I’ll just keep on doing my job well and always sing better than before. I know I’ll prove them wrong someday that I’m not a loser. Because I read comments saying that I’m a loser which I’m not,” she lamented.

So far, her accomplishments were compared to the achievements of other young singers which has irked her before.

“I’ve stopped reading these comments because I just couldn’t take them sometimes. They make me cry. I know nothing good will come from reading these negative comments,” she sighed.

Jonalyn Viray is one of the few lucky teenagers to have already a house and lot and a car she calls her own. Aside from more projects to come, she is very contented with her career’s direction. What’s left to do now according to her is to always save her earnings.

“I have to learn to prioritize and save because I won’t be in this limelight forever. Whatever talent fee I get, I keep some and divide the rest for my family because I’m the bread winner too. That’s why I enjoy having shows abroad because I get more,” giggled Jonalyn.

At the moment, Jonalyn is trying to finish her high school through distance learning. She was first excited when she enrolled, but when the books arrived, she got nervous about studying at home.

“I’m not used to not having classmates. I felt it to be a disadvantage not to have any guidelines from a teacher and It’s a weird feeling studying on your own. But I really give time for studying so I could graduate already,” she explained.

What’s next?

Jonalyn Viray, whose contract with GMA Records already expired, is looking forward to working with another label. She’s very open to this because of the “new experiences” it possess for her singing career. Jonalyn’s latest song is the theme song for “Mahawi Man Ang Ulap,” GMA Network’s latest soap-opera version of the Sharon Cuneta movie with the same title.

She’s also eyeing a major concert soon in either the Araneta Coliseum or the Aliw Theater
